How to verify a S/MIME signed email (X.509)

  • save the email into a file
  • check that the certificate authority for this sender is known in your system, e.g. GridKA uses this root cetificate, you may need to copy it where your local openssl installation will find it. In Debian it is likely to be /etc/ssl/certs
  • run openssl smime -verify -in email.eml and you should (hoepfully) get Verification successful
