Creating a Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) install DVD from CDs

  • using DiskUtility:
    • if you have a master image (.cdr or .iso) of CD 1 convert it into a read/write disk image (.dmg)
    • create a sparse 1.5G image
    • restore the (dmg-converted) CD 1 to the sparse image
  • mount the sparse image
  • insert / mount CD 2 and then CD 3 and overwrite all packages in Panther.sparseimage/System/Installation/Packages with what's in the CD2/3 Packages directory
  • edit Panther.sparseimage/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstallCache.plist
    • delete all lines
      <key>IFPkgFlagProxyPackageLocation</key>
      and all lines containing
      <string>disc:/Mac OS X Install Disc
  • Unmount the disk image and burn or convert it
